  • Stealing the Mares of Diomedes

For the eighth labor, Hercules was tasked with a feat that would take him into the realm of the fearsome: to steal the Mares of Diomedes, four wild horses renowned for their strength, speed, and a terrifying penchant for human flesh.

These horses, owned by Diomedes, the king of the Bistones of Thrace, were kept chained to a bronze manger because of their ferocious nature, a testament to their untamed and savage spirit. Hercules’ mission was not only to capture these beasts but to outwit the barbaric king and his warriors.
