  • The Origins of Olympia

According to Greek myth, he origin of the Olympia are closely tied to the story of Pelops, a young hero who sought to marry Hippodamia, daughter of King Oenomaus of Pisa. The king, fearing a prophecy that he would be killed by his son-in-law, challenged each suitor to a deadly chariot race—if they lost, they were executed. Pelops accepted the challenge and (not the only only version) prayed to Poseidon, who granted him winged horses. Oenomaus was thrown to his death, and Pelops won both the race and Hippodamia’s hand in marriage.

In honor of his fallen opponent, Pelops established funeral games that became the first Olympic Games.
