The Backbone of the Greek Army
According to myth, the Myrmidons originated on the island of Aegina. The island was once devastated by a plague sent by Hera. To repopulate the land, Zeus transformed the ants of the island into humans — thus creating the Myrmidons, whose name literally means “ant people.” They were known for being disciplined, loyal, hard-working, and fearless, just like ants in nature.
Their greatest fame came during the Trojan War, where they were led by Achilles. The Myrmidons represented raw heroic force — together forming the backbone of the Greek army at Troy. -
